Why GA4 and Google Ads Show Different Conversion Numbers
Bellhaven Dog Grooming, an illustrative account, saw 198 key events from Google Ads in GA4 for October and 177 conversions in Google Ads. Five normal differences and one missing event explain the 21.

Because they count different things. Google Ads counts conversions from its own ads, including calls made from the ad, puts each on the day of the ad click and shows only primary actions in its Conversions column. GA4 counts key events on your site on the day they happen, by default every time they fire, and can credit the channel a visitor came back through. Those differences are normal. A gap they cannot explain, such as one conversion action going to zero on one day, is usually a tracking mistake.
Five differences that are normal
Google Ads and GA4 measure different things on purpose, so the two rarely match. Google Ads Help says discrepancies “often up to 20%” are expected from different attribution models. These five explain most gaps before any tracking is wrong.
- Source. Google Ads counts calls made from the ad itself, which happen off your site, and it can add modelled conversions, for example when a visitor clicks on one device and converts on another. Consent mode modelling needs 700 ad clicks over 7 days per country and domain grouping. GA4 counts what happens on your site.
- Counting. A conversion action set to Count One records one conversion per ad click. A GA4 key event counts once per event by default, so two taps on a phone number count twice.
- Dates. The Conversions column puts each conversion on the day of the ad click. GA4 puts it on the day it happened, and so does the All conv. (by conv. time) column, so compare each primary action’s figure there with its GA4 event. The column’s total also counts secondary actions.
- Attribution. Google Ads credits its own ad click within the action’s conversion window, which can run from 1 to 90 days. GA4 can credit another channel the visitor came back through, such as organic search.
- Which actions count. The Conversions column holds primary actions only. Secondary actions appear in All conv., and a conversion created from GA4 inside Analytics starts as secondary.
How to tell a tracking mistake from a normal gap
Add up the normal differences and see which way they point. Bellhaven’s calls from the ad, counting, dates and attribution leave GA4 25 under Google Ads, yet GA4 shows 21 more. The 46 between them is Booked grooming, which has recorded nothing since the new booking page went live on Oct 20 without its event, while GA4 kept counting bookings. Google Ads marks it No recent conversions, which Google Ads Help says can mean no ad clicks have led to a conversion in the last 7 to 14 days. A tag Google Ads can no longer find shows as Inactive instead, and Bellhaven’s phone clicks, from the same Google tag, kept recording.
A count that runs too high can be a mistake too. If one action is primary twice, as a Google Ads tag and as a GA4 import, Google Ads counts it twice, because it removes duplicates within one conversion action and not across two. Keep one primary and set the other to secondary. Bellhaven’s GA4 import of click_phone counts the same taps as Phone number click, but it is secondary, so the taps reach All conv. a second time while Conversions and bidding keep the tag’s count alone.
When imported conversions don’t show
An offline conversion you import appears in the Conversions column on the day of the click that led to it, not the day you uploaded it, so look at the click’s dates first. Imports take about 3 hours to appear. Google Ads doesn’t import a conversion uploaded more than 90 days after its click, or 63 days for enhanced conversions for leads.
What Parallel AI does with the two counts
Parallel AI reads your conversion actions, their settings and your conversions by day through the Google Ads API, and reads a GA4 export you attach. It has no connection to GA4 itself. It matches each key event to its conversion action and separates the normal differences from the broken ones. When an event is broken, it shows what bidding has learned from since, writes the fix in a Doc and adds the data exclusions for bidding.
When the problem sits in a conversion source itself, Data Manager conversion diagnostics traces it from the tag to the campaign goal, and Ask Advisor in Google Analytics helps on the GA4 side.

Questions and answers
Which number is right, GA4 or Google Ads?
Both, for what each counts. Google Ads counts what its ads drove, by the day of the click, for bidding. GA4 counts what happened on your site. Match them action by action, and fix only what the normal differences cannot explain.
Why does Google Ads count duplicate conversions?
Usually because two primary actions record the same event, such as a Google Ads tag and an imported GA4 key event. Google Ads removes duplicates within one conversion action, not across two, so keep one primary and set the other to secondary.
Why are my offline conversions not showing in Google Ads?
Look at the dates of the clicks, since imported conversions appear there. Allow about 3 hours after the upload. Google Ads doesn’t import a conversion uploaded more than 90 days after its click, or 63 days for enhanced conversions for leads.
Does Parallel AI connect to GA4?
No. Parallel AI reads Google Ads through the Google Ads API and reads the files you attach, such as a GA4 export.
Is there a free trial?
Eligible new individual, Team and Agency customers can start a five-day free trial. Select your plan, connect Google Ads and complete checkout with a payment card. The trial includes 25% of that plan’s monthly usage and the same model, Google Ads account and workspace limits. Team and Agency trials share 25% of the selected two-seat plan’s monthly allowance across two people. Unless you cancel in Settings → Billing before the trial ends, your selected subscription starts automatically at the monthly, quarterly or annual price shown at checkout.
Fix what is broken and leave what is normal
Bellhaven Dog Grooming, the illustrative account in this guide, counted 177 conversions in Google Ads and 198 key events in GA4 for October. One missing booking event hid 46 bookings, and the normal differences took back 25.
Parallel AI reads your conversion actions through the Google Ads API and the GA4 export you attach, then writes which differences are normal and what to fix.
